About the Annual Welcome

Our Keynote Speaker Dr. Sarah Shulkind

Dr. Sarah Shulkind is the Head of School of Alice and Nahum Lainer School in Los Angeles, a Jewish day school serving over 600 children from preschool - eighth grade. Dr. Shulkind is a gifted public speaker who focuses on numerous topics including the idea of balancing confidence and humility and addressing the tradition of "teaching giving". She has published articles in Education Leadership, Principal Leadership, The Jewish Journal and The Middle School Journal, among others. In the spring of 2015, Dr. Shulkind was named a Wexner Field Fellow. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband Andrew and their four children Lucy, Olivia, Sadie, and Oscar.
Dr. Shulkind graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where she received a national award for her work in educational reform and research. She completed her M.Ed. in Teaching and Curriculum at Harvard University and her doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of California, Los Angeles, for which her dissertation earned the National Association of Secondary Schools Dissertation Award in connection with her research on Middle Level Advisory Programs.
Ron and Rotem,
Hear Ron and Rotem share their stories. The high school graduates from Hof Ashkelon & Kiryat Malachi will bring their Israel and their story to Tucson.
The Shinshinim (a year of service) program is a joint project of our community, The Jewish Agency for Israel, and our partnership region. The program is a way to learn about Israel from a different point of view, while fostering a greater understanding among our community members between the two countries. For the young emissaries it is a life-changing experience.
The Mitzvah Magic Program
brings together teams of volunteers who are paired (anonymously) with families selected by Jewish Family and Children's Services.
The circles assemble baskets for Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah and Passover. Over the last 10 years, Mitzvah Magic has helped more than 200 families. For a family struggling to make ends meet, gifts and holiday foods provided by Tucson's Mitzvah Magic program are "a godsend," one recipient says. "Just receiving these gifts made a hard day much happier," said another. An 11-year-old girl whose family received a basket wrote a thank you note in a rainbow of crayon colors. "I was really surprised when my parents came home with tons of stuff. We are very grateful for everything and it was all very useful." Yet another family wrote, "Someday we will return the favor."
Mitzvah Project
In honor of the 10th Anniversary of Mitzvah Magic consider bringing along a gift card in the amount of $10 to contribute to the Women's Philanthropy Mitzvah Magic Program.
